5 ways to create work-life balance

Do you constantly feel tired, overwhelmed and stressed out? The number of people facing a burnout are increasing every day. If you are in need of a better balance in life, here are 5 ways to help you create a better work-life balance:

1) Micro-breaks - for example to stop, close your eyes and breath for 3 breaths. Don't underestimate the power of short breaks throughout the day to help the brain re-boot.

2) Walk slowly and practice mindfulness - people that are stressed tend to talk fast, walk fast and do everything they do (yeah, you guessed it) fast. But why are we in such a hurry? Try to do the opposite and sloooow down your pace. You'll notice how you become more aware of your surroundings and what you hear, see and feel when you slow down. Life is more enjoyable when you slow down and this mindfulness practice will help you recharge your batteries.

3) Singletasking - Multitasking is such an unhealthy norm in today's society, unfortunately. Multitasking is very stressful for your brain because it needs to jump between differents tasks very quickly over and over again. Back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. This is very draining and exhausting for the brain. Instead, try to singletask your way through life and notice how much more energy you are left with at the end of the day. Your friends and family will thank you for it.

4) Set healthy boundaries - Stop being a people-pleaser and start saying "No" to people. This goes for all your relationships (at home, at work, with friends etc). Say no when you don't feel a "Hell YES!". Honour and respect yourself and your boundaries.

5) Start and end the day with a self-care routine - If you start and end your day with a rejuvenating self-care routine you will set the tone for the rest of the day and you'll increase your chances for getting good quality sleep. Examples of self-care acts are:

  • Meditation
  • Yoga
  • Body scanning/Relaxation techniques
  • Breathwork
  • Journaling
  • Reading
  • Go for a slow walk
  • Taking a hot shower
  • Etc

Try different things and find what works best for you. It's not what you do once in a while, but what you do every day that shapes your life. Remember, small habits create big change and with daily intention you can move mountains.
